A familiar warning.
A different danger.
A Black father cradles his infant son and prepares him for the racial danger he expects the boy to face. One sentence changes the meaning of the room.
The Talk moves a familiar conversation from the street to the hospital, examining what happens when a mother recognizes danger and the institution meant to provide care dismisses her authority.
The film uses performance, framing, sound and withheld information to let the audience encounter the same words twice: first through expectation, then through knowledge.
